Instrumental in
providing the
Technical
Project Management and
Sr. Consulting to assist Utilicorp
to migrate
their NT Workstation
desktops to the new
standard when this
section of the business
was split off from
TransAlta. This project
required creating a plan
that required touching
every desktop across
Alberta (600)
and
every
lineman’s truck notebook
(200)
and
re-addressing
the static IP devices
(180) at 48 sites
over
the period of a single
long weekend with no
going back. During the
preparation for this
“Big Bang” weekend RDF
managed the project as
well as the 20
contractors used for the
weekend. Additionally
RDF was required to
produce the technical
solutions to assist the Utilicorp technical
staff by creating
automation procedures
that made the job easier
and less error prone for
the 20 field staff and
4 helpdesk staff that
were providing support
during the conversions.

pre-existing Windows
2000 AD domain.
Included in the solution
was the migration from
Exchange 5.5 to 2003,
SQL 7 to SQL 2000 and
splitting the existing
Citrix Server Farm into
2 distinct farms for
security purposes.
Linux on the Desktop
Seminar.
Taught
a seminar
on using Linux on the
Desktop.
The course was provided
to give exposure to
these consultants
to illustrate how
using Linux can be used
in a day to day
environment with a slant
towards comparing Linux
to Windows.

Provide a default
install of Redhat
Enterprise Linux 3 and
Oracle 9i RDBMS.
Samba Server on Linux
Installed/configured
Samba server to be used
by a small office as a
file server to store
their documents. Users
were unaware that the
new server was running
Linux. Supported this server
for the past 2 years.
IIS and SQL 2000 Cluster
Bell West
required assistance with
implementing and
documenting a Windows
2000 IIS and SQL 2000
cluster that would be
used for production on
one node and development
being used on the
other. This environment
gave the developers
access to a clustered
environment for
development and also
allowed for easy
migration to production
after testing.
Desktop Conversion from
Novell to Windows 2003
Server
This project for the
Agriculture Financial
Services Corporation (AFSC)
required programming and
scripting development
work. RDF developed utilities
to make the desktop
migration run without
the need to visit (and
re-visit) the desktops
as servers were
converted from Novell
Server to Windows 2003
Servers. In order to
quickly handle the
desktop conversions, RDF
developed 2 applications
that would automatically
convert the Novell
printer and drive shares
to Microsoft printer and
drive shares and would
login to the Exchange
domain automatically for
the users. Additionally
RDF’s scripting
capabilities were used
to help build other
smaller utilities to
reduce effort and
timelines.
VMWare Physical to
Virtual migration
RDF created processes
and provided the solution
to migrate 9 NT4
machines in 9 days
(which included
preparation time) with
the ability for
AFSC
to
re-use this methodology
for future servers in
their environment.
RDF
was able to provide a
reproducible methodology
that has since been used
to migrate additional
NT4 machines to the
production VMWare
servers by the client. This was all done
BEFORE
any automated tools were
created by VMWare or 3rd
parties.
Consolidate 6 POP3

the packages and
deploying the
applications on the
existing Citrix XPE
server farm for
Burlington Resources and
overseeing the software
package creation for the
desktop deployment.
During this time created
a method for re-using
the packages created for
the Windows 2000 Pro
desktops on the Citrix
servers saving
duplication of effort
and improving the time
to implement these
packages.
Server Consolidation
RDF created the plan and
performed the migration
of multiple File /
Printer shares to
consolidate on a Windows
2003 Cluster server
using Robocopy for
Neteller. Investigated
and created a migration
plan to standardize on
redirected folders for
the Desktop, Favorites
and My Documents. RDF
also evaluated the
network for issues that
could cause additional
problems for further
server consolidation. Installed Terminal
Server License Server. Assisted with the
evaluation of methods to
migrate SMS and LiveComm
servers to virtual
servers. Documented
existing environment as
a base line.
VMWare GSX to ESX Server
Upgrade and Production
Site Administration.
Architected, designed
and implemented a
production GSX server
environment
to introduce
this customer to virtual
machine technology to
save them money during
the start-up phase of
this software
development company. Initially running 8 VM’s
on two physical servers
which included Window
2003 running IIS 6,
Exchange 2003 on Windows
2003, SQL 2000 on
Windows 2000 and 3 in
development proprietary
applications. This fast
growing company required
more systems then GSX
could support and RDF
justified the upgrade
from GSX to ESX server. RDF installed 2
additional servers
(total of 4) have been
added and the client
virtual machine count
exceeds 50 virtual
machines. RDF has
completed the upgrades
required to bring these
servers from ESX 1.x to
2.5.3 over the last 2
years and has put ESX 3
into the budget for the
upcoming year along with
centralized storage.
Prior to using Virtual
Center using the COM
objects provided by
VMWare RDF created an
application to monitor
the site and each VM
giving email
notification when a VM
changes state.
